Why image rules matter more than they look
Marketplace image rules are not just formatting pedantry. Amazon suppresses listings whose main image breaks the pure-white rule. Shopify themes crop inconsistent aspect ratios badly. Etsy ranks listings partly on image quality signals. Getting this right is one of the cheapest conversion wins available to a small store.
Amazon
Main image background: pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255). Non-negotiable.
Product fill: at least 85% of the frame.
Minimum size: 1000px on the longest side to enable zoom; 1600px recommended.
Format: JPEG preferred, also TIFF, PNG, GIF.
Main image: no props, no text, no watermarks, no logos.
Additional images: up to 8 further images where alternate angles, scale shots and lifestyle context are allowed.
Amazon explicitly permits alternate-angle images in the supporting slots — this is where AI-generated angles belong.
Shopify
Maximum: 4472 x 4472px, up to 20MB.
Recommended: square 2048 x 2048px for consistent theme cropping.
Format: JPEG for photos, PNG when transparency is needed, WebP for speed.
Consistency: keep every product image in the same aspect ratio, or grids will look broken.
Shopify does not restrict backgrounds, but a consistent background across a collection page is one of the strongest trust signals a store can send.
Etsy
Recommended: 2000px on the shortest side.
Aspect ratio: 4:3 landscape for the thumbnail.
Slots: up to 10 images per listing.
Etsy actively encourages scale shots, detail shots and multiple angles.
eBay
Minimum: 500px on the longest side; 1600px recommended for zoom.
No borders, no text, no watermarks on the main image.
Up to 24 images per listing, free.
How many angles do you actually need?
Across all four platforms the practical answer is the same: one hero plus four supporting views covers the vast majority of buyer questions. That is a hero, two three-quarter views, a top-down, and a low angle.
Shooting that set traditionally means five setups per SKU. Generating it with an AI product image generator means one upload per SKU.
File preparation checklist
Export at 2000px square where the platform allows it
JPEG quality 80–85 — beyond that you add weight without visible gain
Strip EXIF data before upload
Name files descriptively: `black-leather-tack-locker-front-left.jpg` — filenames are a small but real SEO signal
Always write real alt text describing the product and the angle
